Chapter 2 Walkthrough

With the bridge repaired, your Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster journey continues into the northern continent. Two points of interest are immediately apparent: a mysterious cave to the north and the port town of Pravoka to the east. Before seeking passage across the sea, let’s investigate the cave.
The enemies in this new region are a significant step up in difficulty. Be prepared for tougher fights and save your game frequently.
- Ogres (100 HP) - Hit hard but give excellent XP and Gil. Focus-fire them down.
- Lizards (92 HP) - Have high defense. Use your strongest attacks or magic.
- Tarantulas (64 HP) - Can poison your party. Defeat them quickly.
First Stop: Matoya’s Cave

Head north from the bridge. The path is straightforward, and you’ll soon find the entrance to Matoya’s Cave. Inside, you’ll meet Matoya, a blind witch who is frantically searching for her stolen Crystal Eye. Her talking brooms add a bit of strange charm to the place.
You can’t help her find the Crystal Eye just yet, but this visit establishes an important future quest you’ll complete in Chapter 3. While you’re here, collect the treasures she has lying around:
- 2 Potions
- 1 Antidote
With the cave explored and the witch’s plight noted, it’s time to continue your journey east toward the port town.
The Port Town of Pravoka

Return to the main path and travel east along the coastline. You’ll soon arrive at Pravoka, a town overrun by pirates. Your first stop should be the Inn (50 Gil) to rest and save your progress.
Upgrade Your Equipment
Visit the weapon and armor shops to spend the Gil earned on your journey.
- Weapons: The Broadsword (450 Gil) is a fantastic upgrade for Warriors and Red Mages. The Battle Axe (450 Gil) is a good alternative for Warriors if you prefer raw power over accuracy.
- Armor: Iron Armor (640 Gil) is a major defensive boost for your Warrior, but it’s very expensive. You can buy it now if you can afford it, or wait until the next town. Leather Gloves (50 Gil) are a cheap and effective upgrade for everyone.
Purchase Level 2 Spells
Pravoka sells Level 2 magic, offering powerful new tools for your mages. Each spell costs 250 Gil.
- Black/Red Mages: Temper (250 Gil) is a must-buy. It boosts a character’s Attack power and is invaluable for boss fights. Blizzard (250 Gil) is a solid ice-elemental attack spell.
- White/Red Mages: Invis (250 Gil) increases a character’s Evasion, making them harder to hit. NulShock (250 Gil) reduces lightning damage and will be very useful soon.
Prioritize buying Temper for your Black or Red Mage above all else. Then, upgrade your main fighter’s weapon to the Broadsword. If you have leftover Gil, buy Invis and a pair of Leather Gloves.
The Pirates of Pravoka

In the northwestern part of town, you’ll find Bikke, the pirate captain. Speak with him, and he and his crew of 9 Pirates will attack you.

9 Pirates
This fight is easier than it looks. The Pirates have very low HP (24 each) and defense. Use physical attacks to take them down one by one. If you have the Sleep spell, a single cast can neutralize most of them, making the fight trivial. Don’t waste powerful spells like Fire; save your MP.
The Open Seas

After defeating them, a humbled Bikke will surrender his ship to you. The world is now yours to explore! Upon winning, you also have a chance to receive a Leather Shield as a drop.
With the ship, you can travel the inner sea. You’ll encounter new aquatic enemies:
- Sahagin (28 HP) & Sahagin Chief (64 HP)
- Sharks (120 HP)
- Buccaneers (50 HP)
Almost all sea creatures are weak to Lightning. If you bought the Thunder spell in Cornelia, it will be extremely effective here. The sea is a great place to grind for a few levels, as the enemies give good XP and Gil.
Prepare for Chapter 3
Your next destination is the elven kingdom of Elfheim. To get there:
- Sail west from Pravoka, past Cornelia.
- Continue south along the coast of the western continent.
- You will find a port where you can dock. Elfheim is a short walk from there.
Before you set sail for the next chapter:
- Rest at the Inn in Pravoka or Cornelia.
- Stock up on Potions (aim for 20+) and Antidotes (10+).
- Ensure your mages have learned the key spells from both towns.
- Save your game. The journey ahead is long and filled with new dangers.
