Chapter 9 Walkthrough

With the Oxyale from your last adventure, you can now explore the ocean depths. The next leg of your Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster journey takes you to the port town of Onrac, located on the coast of the large western continent. Fly your airship there and prepare for one of the game’s largest dungeons.
The Sunken Shrine

In Onrac, you can purchase new Level 7 spells for your Wizards. When you’re ready, speak to the girl standing by the dock. Seeing that you have the Oxyale, she will let you use her submarine to descend to the Sunken Shrine.
This dungeon is massive and filled with treasure. Your first goal should be to explore the upper floors. From your starting point on the third floor, take the stairs leading up.
The Treasure Floors & Rosetta Stone
The upper floors (F4 and F5) are a treasure trove. You’ll find a full set of powerful Diamond equipment for your Knight and, most importantly, the Rosetta Stone in a chest on the 5th floor. This key item is essential for understanding the Lufenian language later on. The 5th floor is also home to friendly mermaids who will offer you snippets of lore.

After collecting the Rosetta Stone, return to the entrance and take the stairs leading down. The lower floors contain even more treasure, including the Giant’s Gloves (which let you cast Saber) and a second Ribbon, an invaluable accessory that protects against all status ailments.
The Fiend of Water

After thoroughly looting the dungeon, proceed to the lowest level (F1). In the final chamber, you will find the Fiend of Water, Kraken, guarding the Water Crystal.

Kraken
Kraken is a formidable opponent with a devastating 8-hit physical attack. He is, however, extremely weak to Lightning. Your Black Wizard should spam Thundaga every turn. Have other party members cast defensive buffs like Protera and Invisira from Crescent Lake to survive his physical onslaught. A Haste-buffed fighter using the Giant’s Gloves (Saber) can also deal significant damage.
Revitalizing Waters
Upon defeating Kraken, the Water Crystal will be restored to its brilliant blue. Use the portal to exit the shrine. Your next task is to find someone who can decipher the Rosetta Stone, which will lead you to the final Fiend.

Strategy
Kraken
Kraken is arguably the toughest of the four Fiends due to its overwhelming 8-hit physical attack. Surviving this assault is your top priority. However, it has a critical weakness: Lightning.
Your Black Wizard’s only job is to cast Thundaga every single round. Your White Wizard must cast party-wide defensive buffs like Protera and Invisira. Stacking these spells is key to reducing Kraken’s damage to manageable levels. Your Knight or Master should use the Giant’s Gloves to cast Saber, then attack. A well-placed Haste on your main fighter will also dramatically speed up the fight. Focus on exploiting the lightning weakness and keeping your defenses up, and you will prevail.
