Chapter 5 Walkthrough

With the Earth Crystal restored in your previous quest, it’s time to find the source of the world’s raging fires. Board your ship and sail west from Melmond, across the vast Aldean Sea. The world map will wrap around, leading you to the eastern coast of the starting continent. Dock at the port and walk southwest to the town of Crescent Lake.
The Sages and the Canoe

Crescent Lake is home to the Twelve Sages. Head to the forested area in the northeast to speak with them. Hearing of your victory over Lich, the sage Lukahn will tell you of your destiny to defeat the four Fiends. As a reward, another sage will grant you the Canoe. This vital item allows you to travel across rivers, opening up new paths.
Gearing Up for the Volcano
Before leaving, visit the shops for powerful new spells and gear.
- Magic: Level 6 spells are available. Thundaga is a must-have for Black Mages. For White Mages, Protera and Invisira are fantastic party-wide defensive buffs, and Exit is a crucial quality-of-life spell that lets you instantly escape dungeons.
- Equipment: The shops sell a full set of Mythril gear. These are solid upgrades, especially the Mythril Sword and Mythril Mail.
Journey to Mount Gulg

With the Canoe, you can now reach the volcano. Paddle up the network of rivers west of Crescent Lake. The river currents will guide you, but be prepared for tough new enemies like Crocodiles and Hydras. At the end of the river path, you’ll find Mount Gulg.
Inside Mount Gulg

Mount Gulg is a labyrinth of lava-filled caverns. Every step on a lava tile will damage your entire party for 1 HP, so navigate efficiently. Most enemies inside are Fire-based and weak to Ice; spells like Blizzara from Elfheim are your best friend here.
The dungeon is vast and full of treasure. Make sure to explore the dead-end paths on the lower floors.
On the fourth basement floor (B4), you can find two game-changing pieces of equipment. The Ice Brand is a powerful sword that deals extra damage to fire-based enemies, making it the best weapon for this dungeon. The Flame Shield offers excellent defense and resistance to Ice attacks.
At the very bottom of the volcano (B5), you will find the Fire Crystal and its guardian, the Fiend of Fire.

Marilith
Marilith is a physical powerhouse with 6 attacks per turn, and she can also cast Fira. Your top priorities are defense. Cast party-wide buffs like NulBlaze, Protera, and Invisira. Offensively, equip your best fighter with the Ice Brand you just found, then use the standard Haste and Temper combo to take her down quickly.
Rekindled Flame

Upon defeating Marilith, the Fire Crystal will be restored, extinguishing the rampant flames across the world. Use the portal behind the altar to exit the dungeon and prepare for your next journey into the frozen north to acquire the airship and face the third Fiend.

Strategy
Marilith
Marilith, the Fiend of Fire, is a devastating physical attacker, landing up to 6 hits per turn. She also uses Fira for party-wide damage.
Begin the fight by casting defensive buffs. NulBlaze is essential to reduce her fire damage. Follow up with party-wide buffs like Protera and Invisira to mitigate her relentless physical assault. Once your defenses are up, have your mages cast Haste and stack Temper on your strongest physical attacker (preferably equipped with the Ice Brand). Keep your White Mage on healing duty with Curaga, and Marilith will fall to your buffed-up fighter.
